Family Centered Approach to Procedural Sedation: Meeting every patient’s needs with parent panel

Reviewed by Loretta C. Reilly, MSN, CRNP, CPNP

A robust question and answer period followed the presentation by two parents of chronically ill children who are being cared for by the staff of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.  They told of their children’s experiences and here is a summary of some key learning points:

• Communication and preparation are key
• The first and all subsequent healthcare experiences set the stage for the future
• It takes time for parents and children to “recoop” after a negative experience
• Staff need to “connect” with the parents
• Waiting times are the toughest
• Medical play at home is very beneficial
• Pain management requires collaboration among staff, parents and children
• Parents can be helpful with new staff members in preparing children for experiences
